Electric systems face new challenges day by day. Along with traditional challenges, such as transmission network bottlenecks that may limit power transfers on some strategic corridors and consequently the transactions on electricity markets, there are new ones that have to be addressed and solved. Renewable sources, for instance, pose problems for electric system stability, because of their intermittency and difficulty to forecast. But also other less “technical” challenges have appeared, like the opposition by local population against new projects (the well known Nimby syndrome), or the need for a common energy strategy at European level. In these last two cases, the action of politicians is more than welcome. Finally, a quick overview of some Abb innovative technologies was presented, with an eye on smart grid.
